Getting the notes from students who have spent time in SILE has been a surprisingly positive experience for me. When students get in trouble, the last thing you expect them to do is tell you how you’ve been a force for good in their lives. It helped me realize that the relationships I’ve built with students mean more than anything else. Coaching basketball has introduced me to a completely different side of the student body and helped me get to know some of the students I wouldn’t normally see on a daily basis. I went from volunteering to taking on a head coach role for the Freshman girls basketball team. Now my classroom smells like sweaty uniforms and feet. I love it!
