What do students expect when they come to Guilford?

New students have a variety of different expectations when coming into Guilford. This article is going to cover two outsiders’ perspectives on Guilford. Charlie Hahn who came here after being in private school for most of her life, and Aryam Hussein who transferred from East High School in the middle of the year.

Charlie – I have noticed that the people at Guilford don’t care as much about how people dress or present themselves. More than half the student population wears pajamas to school every day and no one comments on it. At Christian Life, the private school I went to, there was a dress code that people stuck to but on occasion there was a casual dress day fundraiser. On casual dress days we did not have to wear uniforms, but there were still a few regulations for things we could not wear.

I don’t miss the dress code, but I understand why they had it. It was pretty much to maintain order, have a clean look, and make all the students equal so that no one would feel less than. I do like that I can wear pajamas to school.

Most times people mind their business here. Christian Life was a small school, so almost everyone knew each other, but here people just stick to themselves and their friend groups.

At Christian Life all the hallways look different, but I get lost at Guilford so easily because all the hallways look the same.

I never have homework here, but at Christian Life I had homework in at least one or two classes every day.

Another thing is that almost everyone here went to Eisenhower,so lots of people already know each other, and a very small number of people went outside schools like CLS.

Aryam – I usually only came to Guilford during volleyball games, so the only parts of Guilford that I would see were the good looking parts.

People are really loud, especially during lunch which I would expect, but back at East it usually didn’t get that loud during my 6th hour lunch.

I noticed people tend to stand in the middle of the hallway in groups instead of to the side which gets kind of annoying since the hallways are narrow.

One thing I did notice a lot was that they open the doors at 7:55 in the morning and that’s if they feel like it. The East doors opened at exactly 7:45 so we had 15 minutes to just chill before class.

Other than that, the school is really nice, the colors blend well together, there’s a lot of windows so it’s nice to have light coming in. I like that the hallway lights are more yellow and dim instead of bright light.

Guilford wasn’t what either of us were expecting, it’s pretty nice compared to the schools we came from.
