The Commons is one area of school where violence often takes place.

Throughout the school years we have seen plenty of violence here in our school. There have been things such as social media threats, fights, gang affiliated arguments disputes and more. As for the 2023 school year there has been a handful of disputes here in our school.

“Almost every two weeks in our school you see fights here,” said Paris Clark, senior. “Students get riled up, and the teachers try their hardest to break it up”.

As a student, I can speak for teachers. We want to see less fights in our school. Some kids fear they will come to school and have to fight, while others pick for a fight.

However not all violence comes from fights.

“Last year during my lunch hour, I remember a situation where a student brought a gun to school, and it was found in their backpack,” said Zanya Hurt, senior. “Teachers closed the doors, and had us go into a soft lockdown. That situation was very scary, but yet so unpredictable.”

There are many unpredictable things that happen around the world at schools. It is very sad that some students fear going to a place where they get education because they don’t know what will happen to them.  Violence can lead to a lot of issues, like creating an unsafe learning environment that is hard for students to focus on their studies in an environment which can cause stress and fear. It can also disrupt the educational process, lower academic performance, and lead to long-term emotional issues.

It’s really important to promote peace and understanding in schools to create a positive and productive atmosphere. Violence is never important or beneficial, especially not in school. Schools should be safe places where everyone can learn and grow. When violence enters the picture, it can cause fear, anxiety, and even physical harm. With that being said, school violence needs to stop .
