I joined Guilford’s newspaper team to enhance my writing skills so that I have a better understanding of different literature styles and editing techniques. Since I want to be either a medical malpractice or education lawyer, these skills will help me have an easier time studying in college. I also really enjoy listening to what other students and teachers have to say regarding current events. I’m looking forward to interviewing people and putting together engaging stories.

Malaika Khan, sophomore. I refer to October 11th as Indigenous Peoples’ day, but sometimes I refer to it as Columbus day due to the fact that that’s what we were taught growing up. Elementary and Middle schools would teach students about Christopher Columbus and the positive impact he has caused on the land we live on. Schools never teach students about the negative impacts, though. He and his men would rape, torture, and started a genocide of Indigenous people and demolished their tribes. Today, only 2.09% of the population is Native American due to their actions. I believe someone who stole land and tortured the people living on it shouldn’t be commemorated. Instead, the people who were victims of his acts should be honoured and remembered on this day.

How does it make you feel that “Columbus Day” is now known as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
