On March 2nd, 2024, The 83rd annual Young Artist Show: High School Division was held by the Rockford Art Museum at Rockford University’s Clark Arts Center. The winner of the Senior Portfolio Award was GHS senior, Humberto Carlos Hernandez.
“I have been wanting to win it since sophomore year, since I started doing art,” said Hernandez. “It makes me proud to bring it into Guilford.”
Hernandez has been doing art for only three years, and already has an inspiring drive for it.
“It took a lot of work,” said Hernandez.
He explained how at the beginning of this process, he would get inspiration from other experienced artists and would ask for advice on certain materials. His favorite genre of art is hyperrealism.
“Drawing the intricacies of expression,” said Hernandez.
Art is a very time consuming thing. Each piece of artwork takes about all of 2 weeks that are required to take for completion. The portfolios, which include all pieces of artwork, take many months to complete.
“That’s what the curriculum is,” said Hernandez. “Two weeks per piece,”
Art also opened opportunities and inspiration for a future career for Hernandez.
“I want to be an Industrial Designer, it’s like a mix of engineering and art,” said Hernandez.
His deep appreciation and love for art is expressed through his hard work and dedication.
“I feel like I was born to do it,” said Hernandez.
