On Wednesday, February 14th, 2024, the varsity boys basketball team made history with an undefeated season and received the conference title for the second year in a row. After a close playoff game against Hononegah High School, the Vikings’ season came to an end. The team’s conference success won’t be forgotten, with hopes of making it to state in future seasons.
“Being number one feels great and at the beginning of the season we expected this,” said Sophomore, Brandon Chatman. “We just gotta stay humble and make a far run for state.”
All of the boys emphasized the impact of their coach pushing them to get them where they are now.
“Play together, stay together, when things get rough we don’t point fingers, we just play as a team,” said Malachi Johnson, Senior.
The boys have a lot of motivation and drive to push themselves further, such as their coaches and team support.
“The chemistry,” said Johnson, “there is no selfishness which makes a big difference.”
They described themselves as a family and how they differ from other teams, which contributed to their success as a team.
“We know what to do to lift each other up and help each other out.” said Michael Jones, Senior.
Their coach, Chris Dixon, pushes them to the measures necessary for them to succeed.
““Having us run hills in the summer, hitting the weight room when nobody else was, and making sure that we practice hard so that everything falls into place,” said Johnson.
The team receives immense amounts of support through their journey.
“The support that I get motivates me, friends, family, and just people in general,” said Cinco Gary, Senior.
The boys have expectations and goals for the team as well as personal goals. One of the biggest goals for the team is to go to state and make a name for themselves.
“That is like our big goal,” said Jayden Webster, Junior, “To be one of the top teams in the state.”
