Megan Thee Stallion is back with her first single of the year, “HISS.” Megan’s new theme of snakes is continued from her last single, “Cobra.” Cobra gave many rock elements and a sample from Return to Forever’s “Cosmic Rain (Live at Musikladen).” Megan is very vocal in sharing the events in her life through “Cobra” and continues that in her new single “HISS.”
Megan aggressively starts off her new song to point out the way whenever she gets mentioned, that other people will try to take the spotlight from her and make the situation about them. She clears the air before she starts to rap, giving you a clear expectation of what to expect in this song. Megan raps about how other people seem to be so obsessed with her and she “feels like Mariah Carey,” when she goes back to Mariah Carey’s hit song “Obsessed.” In this line we see her upset that other people feel the need to say her name when all they want is attention, and how all this backlash that she receives seems more like obsession rather than critique.
This specific song comes into line with Megan’s alter ego “Tina Snow.” Tina Snow is mentioned in the lines “He can’t move on, can’t let it go.” and “He hooked, nose full of that Tina Snow.” This is a clever punchline on not only the name but the line itself. “Snow” or “cocaine” is a heavily addictive drug and in the line Megan compares herself to saying she is just as addictive.” Megan also has other clever punchlines throughout the song concerning the recent situation on social media and real life. Along with Tina Snow, Megan has another alter ego called “Hot girl Meg,” This character by Megan is seen to be switching her flow and style throughout the song and in the music video. She gives an amazing performance during the music video and gives her fans so much to look forward to in future music videos.
Then comes the most controversial part of the song. This song caused controversy across tiktok, twitter, and even Nicki Minaj: “These h*** don’t be mad at Megan, these h*** mad at Megan’s Law.” This beautifully executed bar refers to the federal law that mandates information on sex offenders be public. This single bar sparked a social media meltdown from self-proclaimed Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj. This is a veiled remark aimed at Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, who is a registered sex offender after pleading guilty to attempted rape by fear at the age 16. Mere hours later, after the release of the song, Minaj got on Instagram live to comment on the song and Megan herself. Nicki claimed that Megan lied about getting shot when she herself was a victim of domestic violence.
Minaj started to create lines on her Instagram live about Megan. “Bad b**** she like six foot, I call her “Big Foot”/The b**** fell, I said, Get up on your good foot.” This is referring to Megan’s height (5ft 10 inches/178cm) and the fact that in 2020 Tory Lanez shot Megan in her foot. Minaj also repeats the line: “Lying on your dead momma.” Megan’s mother, Holly Thomas, passed in March 2019 of a brian tumor. This rap “beef” (proclaimed by Twitter/X) has set Nicki Minaj into a spiral by liking tweets related to doxxing people and finding Holly Thomas’s grave site. After the release of HISS then came the release of Nicki Minaj’s “Big Foot.” Megan has yet to seriously comment on the situation but gave hints and jokes on her own Instagram live to note she knew about the situation.
Nicki wasn’t particularly the only one who Megan may have dissed. Megan may have also dissed Drake in her lines: “These n***** hate on BBLs and be walkin around with the same scars.” This line goes back to people speculating that Drake may have undergone plastic surgery or a liposuction. These rumors spread when many looked at pictures of current Drake and an older Drake. The photos had shown Drake looking very different and people had wondered if he had gotten surgery even from last year. Megan also may have taken shots back to her ex, Pardi. Their relationship ended when Megan found him and another woman in her own bed. In the song she made comments about how Pardi had been trying to get her pregnant during their relationship. Megan’s lines: “None of you n***** was hittin it raw” and “And mad I’m not one of your baby mamas,” lets you see Megan sharing her stories from a relationship that many thought was perfect from a distance and photos, but in reality wasn’t what many thought.
Though Megan made many lines and disses in this song, she adds one more towards the very end of her song. Not only towards Tory Lanez, but towards the fans who support him and say Megan lied about her getting shot. “Download J-Pay, since y’all n***** got so much to say
Or schedule a conjugal visit or something.” Tory Lanez is in prison for 10 years after being found guilty for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. She talks to his supporters saying schedule a conjugal visit because that’s the only way they are going to be able to talk to him now that he is in prison.
Megan’s song created controversy and an outbreak across the internet. Megan’s song debuts at number one on the Billboard top 10 and she continues to be happy with the debut. Fans believe new music is on the way and maybe with new controversy.
