Mrs. Eileen McGinn became an English teacher here after teaching at Flinn Middle School for eighteen years. Before her teaching career, she was a paralegal for eight years and an executive secretary for a landscape architecture firm.
“I always wanted to go into teaching,” said Mrs. McGinn.
Mrs. McGinn’s goal as a teacher here is to become closer with her students and have a positive impact on their lives. She finds it easier to connect to older students as opposed to middle schoolers.
“I try to have those conversations and get to know them as a person first versus just a student in my classroom,” said Mrs. McGinn. “I try to remember the different little things that they’re interested in and to be able to strike up that conversation.”
Although she has been a long time teacher, transferring schools has been a change that she needs to adjust to. She finds a difference in the students and the workload here.
“I don’t have to raise my voice anymore which is really nice,” said Mrs. McGinn. “Just having different conversations because you guys are at an interesting place in life,”
Overall, Mrs. McGinn is enjoying her time at Guilford and feels very welcomed. She has emphasized that although she plans on retiring in the near future, she still has goals she wants to reach to improve her teaching experience.
“The staff has been very welcoming and the kids have been very good,” said Mrs. McGinn.
