Everyone faces setbacks in life; however, these setbacks can be seen as mere obstacles for a person to overcome. For bowler Dylan Legoo, junior, perseverance has paid off in helping him to advance to the Special Olympic state finals in Peoria, Illinois, on December 2nd and 3rd, 2023.
This is Legoo’s third year bowling for Guilford. He is on the varsity bowling team. Students might recognize him in the hallways with his signature thumbs-up gesture.
“Each year he has improved tremendously, and this year is a critical player on the varsity team,” said Bowling coach Jeffery Barabasz.
Legoo will be bowling against one other bowler this weekend and many believe he will do very well.
“He’s one of the better bowlers on varsity,” said Mr. Barabasz.
Sophomore Sarah Legoo, Dylan’s sister and a fellow bowler, is very excited for him to compete this weekend.
“I am very excited and I am very confident he’ll do well,” said Legoo. “He’s really happy, he’s been wanting to do this for a while.”
Both Dylan and Sarah Legoo are state-qualifying bowlers who started bowling as young kids.
“We did this thing called kids bowl free, where we got to bowl 2-3 free games,” says Sarah Legoo, “and when we started bowling we were like let’s actually bowl, it’s really fun.”
Many students know Dylan Legoo from not only his bowler status but also his bright personality and the well-known thumbs-up he always gives to those around him.
“He’s always upbeat and positive, and has an amazing sense of humor,” said Mr. Barabasz.
Legoo looked forward to the match and his only goal in all of his matches was to do his best and have fun. He placed 4th overall and had a lot of fun.
“It’s just for fun,” said Sarah Legoo, “He’s here to have fun and make friends.”
