Due to recent events such as the Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting, students have been itching to find a solution. I don’t believe teachers should be forced to carry. It should be completely optional. Teachers who decide to carry should have to store said gun in a safe within the classroom and should be required to go through several visceral background checks and training. I don’t think the state should have to pay for this, and firearms should be limited to handguns. Already registered concealed carry permit holders (staff members of course) should be able to carry in school, just like they do in public spaces.

For a bit of context, a whopping 98% of mass shootings occur in gun free zones according to the Crime Prevention Research Center (crimeresearch.org). The CPRC has also shown that concealed carry permit holders are the most law abiding demographic within the United States. Concealed Carry permit holders are also convicted of felonies and misdemeanors at less than a sixth the rate of police officers, so even though police commit crimes significantly less than the average citizen, a concealed carry holder tends to be even more law abiding than an off duty police officer. Back in 2013, Barack Obama ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study gun violence in America. The CDC estimated that nearly 500,000 to 3 million cases a year of defensive firearms could be used for self-defense: i.e, rapes, robberies, and murders. They also found that there were nearly 4,940 homicides by firearms a year. (ncdsv.org). We now have the evidence that suggests that guns can help; in fact, if we do the math, guns save 100 times more lives than they take.

I am not speaking of any new policy; I am simply suggesting that people who have already gone through extensive training and arduous background checks be allowed to carry their firearm in gun free zones. Remember that concealed carry permit holders have proven to be possibly the most law abiding demographic we know of. What is wrong with trained people defending us? Would you rather be stuck in a classroom, cowering with no defense?

If one teacher were to step out and fire one round at a shooter, that person would no longer be shooting at innocent people anymore; instead, he would be trying to defend himself, giving fleeing students precious time to escape. Let’s say a shooter enters the school. His goal is to kill as many people as possible. He isn’t thinking of who’s coming to stop him, save for a police officer. Add in several armed teachers into that situation, and you get an entirely different outcome.

Don’t use these shootings as an excuse to tear the basic human rights of self-defense from millions of Americans. In the end, a gun in the hand of your good American citizen helps.
