Every year, during the week of homecoming, Guilford students take part in the powderpuff game. In the game, girls play flag football against the other classes. Freshmen girls play the sophomores, while the juniors play the seniors. Meanwhile, the boys of each classs create dance routines and compete against the each other.

The origins of powderpuff games go back to the 1930s. It was originally a way for girls to get a chance to play a sport during homecoming week, to show school spirit when it wasn’t as socially acceptable.

At Guilford, the tradition of the powderpuff game has gone back decades, all the way back to the late 1970’s; however, powderpuff has changed a lot since those days. In the 1990s, Guilford added a unique dance routine competition for the boys which is judged by the Guilford staff.

“I think it’s been a way for everyone to get excited and show school spirit,” said social studies teacher and GHS 1989 alumni Rick Elston. “It’s also a way for classes to be competitive in a good way.”

Guilford’s powderpuff game takes weeks of preparation as teams are put together and practice schedules are made by each class. At these practices boys coach the girls for the flag football game, while the girls help prepare the boys for their dance routine. These powderpuff practices have been found to be a great bonding experience for students.

“We get to come together and have a good time playing some football,” said Johnny Adamany, junior.

Guilford’s powder-puff game and dance routine provide a unique way for Guilford students to show school spirit and get excited for homecoming. New incoming students find that powderpuff is a great way to meet new people and get involved at Guilford.

“It gives new students a fun experience and helps them make new friends,” said Jacob Morgan, junior. “I just like hanging out with friends and playing football.”

The game usually occurs the Monday of homecoming week. The event is recognized as one of the students’ favorite homecoming activities.

“It’s a great way to meet new people, try something new, and just be yourself.” said Breezie Silvi, junior.
